Television reporter's "best story" is Sullivan University's Graduate School
"What do I want to be when I grow up?" That question has led
Valeria Cummings-Swope on her latest adventure - to complete her Master's in Business Administration degree at Sullivan University. Some of you may remember Valeria Cummings for her smiling face on WKYT television where she worked for 22 years as a reporter.
Today, Valeria serves as the Director of Communication for the Finance & Administration Cabinet of the Commonwealth
of Kentucky.
Time for a change
After her 25 year career in television, Valeria felt she needed a change; she needed more opportunities to spread her wings. Deciding to change careers wasn't an easy one. Valeria said that it was a huge relief when she started at Sullivan because
"they really work with you to get you acclimated to college life." Her nerves quickly melted away as she became immersed in the MBA program.
Perhaps the best part of her
Master's work thus far has been outside of the classroom. In Dr. Ken Miller's class, students learn about, and how to apply, many different theories and means of analysis. The Crystal Ball Analysis that Valeria was working on in class was the very theory that some economists were discussing at one of the Finance & Administration meetings Valeria attended. Some members in attendance did not
understand what was being discussed. Since Valeria has been studying this particular topic, she was able to explain this analysis process in layman's terms!
Go Valeria!
Valeria is scheduled to earn her master's this summer and the
sky's the limit for her and her new degree. When asked what
advice she would offer others in her footsteps, she said, to
"Take it one step at a time. Don't give up – It looks
challenging, and it is, but it's all worth it!"
