"Secrets" showcases Louisville chefs

Three times a week, the creators and guardians of Louisville’s nationally-known restaurant scene share their tips and tricks.

Although their show is called “Secrets of Louisville Chefs,” what guest chefs like Sullivan University’s own John Castro demonstrate for viewers is far from covert.  Instead, Castro and a host of the city’s top chefs prepare dishes that viewers can duplicate at home.

“If they take away a new recipe, a new cooking technique or a suggestion for side dish or beverage, that’s great,” Castro said.

Castro and other guest chefs strive to offer what they call a “viewer’s benefit” with each appearance.

“If nothing else, the audience can say, ‘Wow, I didn’t know that.  I learned something!’” Castro said.  Castro is also the executive chef for the school’s Winston’s Restaurant.

TV meteorologist Kevin Harned and radio personality Kelly K host and take viewers “behind the scenes” at some of the area’s finest restaurants.

Dean Corbett, owner and chef of Equus restaurant in St. Matthews, engages chefs in a lively combination of conversation and practical demonstration, as they recreate some of their favorite dishes.  Corbett also presides over special “Live” editions of the program

The show is taped in Sullivan’s Kitchen Theater, part of the National Center for Hospitality Studies on the Sullivan campus  (3101 Bardstown Road).

“Secrets of Louisville Chefs” airs at 10:30 a.m. and 11: 30 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday on WBKI-TV, Louisville’s CW affiliate and on Insight cable channel 7.

You’ll find information on tickets for program tapings, the “Live” specials, and dozens of recipes from featured restaurants at

Diners don’t often get to meet the chefs who create the dishes.  And chefs work “back of the house,” as the kitchen is called in the business, and yearn for opportunities to interact with their guests. “Secrets” brings chefs and their knowledge to the “front of the house,” or in this case, into each viewer’s home.
