Fort Knox Graduate - Amy Bishop

My name is Amy Bishop and I graduated from Sullivan University in December 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration with a Concentration in Accounting. When I started college, I had no idea how long it would be before I earned that degree. What I learned during my long journey was that balancing family, school, work, and military life is no easy task but can be accomplished through fine-tuned time management skills.

In the fall of 1994 I began taking classes here at the Fort Knox campus in the old WWII barracks. I was excited to meet new people and learn new things. One of the first classes I signed up for was College Success Skills which was a class designed to help us “newbies” learn the ropes for a successful college experience. The instructor began by telling us that we would have to make schedules and to-do lists for the things we do each day. I was thrilled because lists are something I make daily. However, the lists I made each day and the lists she was referring to were two separate things. The instructor wanted lists that recorded each hour of a day. I couldn’t believe it; how was I going to know what I was doing each hour of each day for a week? Surprisingly, I started to realize just how many hours there are in a day and how much time I wasted on certain tasks. This class was extremely beneficial for me when it came to organizing and scheduling my time and activities per day. Anyone who is in school and works and has a family and has to deal with military moves can benefit from time management skills.

My advice is this: grab a calendar, put it on the refrigerator, and have everyone in the family fill in their appointments, chores, game times, etc. Keep a smaller sized calendar with you so you always know who is where at what time. Know your limits and save time for yourself each day. Believe me, it can be done with time management skills, and these skills, like all others, improve with practice.
