Biography

Dean Tran obtained his B.S. Degree in Pharmacy and his Pharm.D. degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in Philadelphia in 1990 and 1993, respectively. He completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology with a sub-specialty in Cardiovascular Therapeutics and Antiarrhythmics at Hartford Hospital and the University of Connecticut. He most recently served as the associate professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at LECOM School of Pharmacy in Erie, Penn.

As an educator and a scientist, Dean Tran has been an integral part of the start-up of two Colleges of Pharmacy. Most recently, he was the Founding Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy in Erie, Penn. In this role, he was instrumental in attaining the institution’s accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). As a practitioner, he has been responsible for the development of clinical services and clinical initiatives to promote the expertise of a pharmacist. He has received over $2 million in research funding, published many articles and abstracts, co-authored books, edited books, and has presented expert information at nearly 100 professional and scientific conferences throughout the United States.

Dean Tran was elected to the State Board of Directors of the American Heart Association in Louisiana and the American Lung Association in Pennsylvania where he has contributed to the promotion of healthier community initiatives. He has chaired committees and sub-committees in various professional organizations such as the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and International Society of Pharmacoeconomic and Outcomes Research. Additionally, Dean Tran was Head of the Clinical and Pharmacy program, Education and Research overseeing three hospitals in Delaware. He has served in similar positions of responsibility in Louisiana and Pennsylvania. Since his tenure at the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy, he has been selected to the 2007 Louisville Healthcare Fellows program; has received an appointment to The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels; and received the 2009 MediStar Leadership Award from Medical News. He was also honored in 2008, 2009, and 2010 as a Business First Health Care Partner. Dean Tran is active in the local chapters of the American Heart Association and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, serving as a member of their respective boards. He served as Chair of the American Heart Association’s 6th Annual Cardiovascular and Stroke Regional Conference, which was held in October 2009.

Dean Tran has served in several roles for the following international institutions: As an accreditation reviewer for the Bachelor of Pharmacy Program at the University of Technology in Jamaica; As the Invited Speaker and Guest Lecturer at the Gurunanak College of Pharmacy International Symposium, “To be or Not To Be: Clinical Pharmacy Education—Sharing the US Experiences,” Nagpur, India, 2009; and as Invited Speaker to the University of the West Indies School of Pharmacy Oath-Taking Ceremony, Trinidad & Tobago.

Dean Tran initiated a Sullivan University College of Pharmacy telepharmacy project, which will provide unbiased and accurate drug information and medication counseling to underserved and faraway populations within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Additionally, he has helped to further the Pharmacy profession in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to contribute to quality instituting the practice of placing College of Pharmacy faculty at various institutions in the area.

Collaborations have also been established with the Louisville Metro Health Department and the Department of Public Health and Wellness to provide assistance with their immunization program for the City of Louisville.

Within the community, Dean Tran is involved in role modeling and teaching of the Asian youth group at the Vietnamese Buddhist Association in downtown Louisville by offering volunteer cultural, physical, and mental development through martial arts every Sunday. He is also Chair of the Vietnamese Buddhist Temple remodeling project. Much work is needed for this project, as this Temple was the first Vietnamese Buddhist Temple established in the city of Louisville as part of the University of Louisville Multicultural Interfaith project.
