Evaluation of Applicants

Except for Early Decision Applicants, evaluation of completed applications will begin by October 1, 2008 and continue until the application deadline of December 31, 2008. This initial evaluation will determine which applicants will be eligible for an on-campus interview. A final evaluation will determine which applicants are eligible for admission. Given the extreme competitiveness of admissions to colleges and schools of pharmacy across the country, multiple criteria are utilized to select the most qualified candidates from the pool of applicants that far exceeds the number of seats available. There is no rolling admissions process. The criteria used in evaluation include the following:

  • Grade point averages in math and science coursework
  • Cumulative grade point average
  • PCAT scores
  • Letters of Recommendation/Evaluation
  • Professional preparedness and motivation as demonstrated by the applicant’s personal essay and co-curricular activities

The Interview Process

Once an applicant’s file is complete, the Admissions and Student Affairs Committee will review the applicant’s submission to determine the applicant’s interview eligibility. If they consider an applicant eligible for an interview, he/she will receive an invitation to attend one of the interview day(s) that will be scheduled for a Friday in February. Applicants selected for an interview must appear personally on the designated day. Telephone interviews will not be conducted except in the most exceptional circumstances.

During the interview process, the applicant will meet with an interview panel consisting of Faculty members, Clinical Faculty/Preceptors, Stakeholders and/or pharmacy students. Panel members will evaluate the applicant’s:

  • Professional motivation and preparedness
  • Personal qualities
  • Communication skills
  • Knowledge of the profession
  • Attitude and cooperation
  • Initiative
  • Attention to detail
  • Stress tolerance

This is done by rating the applicant on a standardized evaluation scale. After reviewing the applicant’s completed application and interview evaluation, the Admissions and Student Affairs Committee can recommend accepting, denying, or placing the applicant on an Alternate List.

The Doctor of Pharmacy at Sullivan University College of Pharmacy is an accelerated program that is rigorous and challenging and requires a strong commitment on the part of our students. The Admissions and Student Affairs Committee will assess the quality and rigor of the pre-pharmacy records presented by each applicant. In doing so, the Committee will:

  • View composite PCAT scores below the 50th percentile with particular concern. While there are no minimum PCAT scores, a composite score below the 50th percentile may be indicative of the need for remedial coursework.
  • Require applicants presenting pre-pharmacy coursework in math and science courses that is more than six years old to selectively take refresher courses as directed by the Committee.
  • While a 2.50 on a 4.0 scale is the minimum cumulative and math/science grade point average for consideration, to be competitive for admission, a higher grade point average is strongly recommended.

The Matriculation Process

After an applicant has received notification of his/her acceptance (a formal letter of invitation from the Dean of the College), the matriculation process begins. The student must return his/her signed matriculation agreement within seven (7) days of receiving the Dean’s letter. In addition, the student must:

  • Submit the required reservation deposit (currently $500.00) by the date designated in the matriculation agreement. This deposit is non-refundable but is applied to the student’s tuition.
  • Submit official copies of all transcripts indicating completion of pre-pharmacy coursework (only if the student had coursework in progress).
  • Submit a recent physical examination record (not more than three months old) and a record of immunizations.
  • Submit proof of medical insurance coverage
  • Non-US citizens /non-permanent residents must provide documentation verifying legal presence in the United States and verify that sufficient funds have been deposited in a U.S. bank to cover all expenses while attending Sullivan University College of Pharmacy
  • Sign an authorization form allowing a criminal background check and/or a drug screen
  • Satisfy the Technical Standards for Admission to the Doctor of Pharmacy program.

If a student either fails to satisfy these matriculation requirements or omits or falsifies any information, the student automatically forfeits his/her seat in the entering class.
