Our Mission

Some ICI members are Italian by birth or heritage, and some have had the experience of working or studying in Italy. Some visit Italy as often as possible, and like to extend the experience by learning more about Italian history and culture. Others, without any particular experience, may simply be interested in things Italian.

We offer opportunities to study Italian authors (English editions), practice speaking Italian in various venues, and learn the art of “slow cooking” Italian-style from experienced chefs and experts. We learn about various regions of Italy, and sample wine, olives, olive oils and cheeses from those regions. We feature lectures on Italian history and art, our annual film series, and the opportunity to borrow an impressive array of materials from the brand new ICI Lending Library.

ICI is a 501(c)(3) community-based organization governed by a Board of Directors. Some events are free and open to the public, while other benefits are available to members only. All fees, grants and other income are used to support ICI programming and scholarships which are periodically awarded to students of Italian art and literature.

We invite you to explore with us the old and new in the Italian cultural and social landscape.

About the Scholarship

ICI will provide $3,000.00 to one Sullivan University student to travel to Italy to engage in a cultural and academic learning experience that relates to both the Italian culture, and his/her academic field of study. The scholarship recipient is encouraged to plan their trip during the 2020 spring or summer quarter break to avoid interrupting their regular studies. Applications are encouraged and welcomed from all disciplines, and applicants should have a genuine interest in Italy and the Italian culture.

Applicants will be responsible for making contact and plans with a discipline-related entity to setup the details of the research and learning opportunity. As an example, a medical student may engage with an Italian hospital or other medical provider(s). A business student may want to work with an Italian business or not-for-profit organization. A hospitality student may want to establish an opportunity with an Italian hotel, restaurant or other hospitality-intensive entity. A legal studies student may want to work with a law firm, an Italian judicial entity or other legal organization. The opportunities are vast and endless, as long as it relates to the student’s field of study. A significant portion of the experience should involve interaction and engagement with the entity assisting with the learning experience.

Members of ICI are willing to assist with helping the recipient to make one or more contacts with a suitable Italian entity to help facilitate the student’s research and learning opportunity. Upon the

recipient’s return, he/she will need to prepare a presentation to the members of ICI to share his/her experiences, learning outcomes and overall information about the opportunity. Recipients are responsible for any and all expenses exceeding the $3,000.00 scholarship and he/she agrees and understands that they travel at their own risk.
