LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sullivan University Associate Provost for Teaching and Learning Dr. Anthony Piña, a prolific author and editor, is the co-editor of a new book on leadership in the field of online learning and education technology.

Dr. Piña edited the book “Lessons in Leadership in the Field of Educational Technology” (Springer Publishing) with Dr. Chris Miller, dean of the College of Education and a professor of education at Morehead State University.

“Chris Miller and I wanted to provide guidance and inspiration for the next generation of online learning/educational technology leaders by providing them with the stories and lessons learned from leaders of the previous generation, including ourselves and many of the ‘big names’ in our field,” Dr. Piña said. “We also had tribute chapters for leaders who are no longer with us.”

Drs. Piña and Miller are also collaborating as editors on an upcoming book series, “Leadership and Best Practices in Educational Technology Management”, which is being published by Brill Publishers.

According to a press release from Brill, the book will include “edited volumes intended to document leadership, management and administration issues, best practices and research within the field of educational technology (digital learning, e-learning, instructional design, online/distance/blended learning, etc.).”

“While there are plenty of books on designing and teaching online courses, there is very little for those who lead, manage and administer online learning and educational technology within their organizations,” Dr. Piña said. “The goal of our series is to fill that gap.”

Dr. Piña said the book series will appeal to anyone in the broad fields of instructional design, educational technology, online/digital learning and educational leadership.

“The target audience is anyone who has a leadership role in educational technology and online learning and who are designing, developing, implementing and evaluating educational technology and online learning at the program, department, institution or system level,” he said. “A lot of these people wish to establish and grow online learning but have few print resources to do it well. We are trying to fix that.”

Drs. Piña and Miller are both long-time members of the Association for Educational Communications & Technology (AECT) and have presented together and served together on many projects and activities. Both are both past presidents of the AECT Division of Distance Learning, have served on the AECT Board of Directors and currently serve as Trustees of the AECT Non-Profit Foundation.

The pair is donating their royalties to AECT so members can access an e-book version of the series at no cost.

Piña has edited five books with most of the chapters written by colleagues.

“I enjoy research, writing and publishing, whether it is for a journal article, a chapter in someone else’s book or editing a book myself,” he said. “I feel that engaging in scholarship makes be better at what I do, and it is fun. I am thrilled about this new book series that will fill a ‘hole’ in the current literature.”
