BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Cox has served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences since 2015. Prior to joining Sullivan University, he was the Vice-chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at South University School of Pharmacy in Savannah, Georgia, where he was a faculty member for 7 years. Before that, he was a faculty member at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. His PhD was obtained from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry. His dissertation work involved the synthesis and structure-activity relationship of serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT2 receptor ligands, and structural bioinformatics of various viral proteins. He completed postdoctoral training in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Georgia. His postdoctoral work involved computational modeling of Hepatitis C and HIV proteins, and drug design targeting HIV integrase inhibition. His current research work is focused on understanding structural correlates for selectivity among compounds active at serotonin receptors. His interests outside the school include hiking and camping. He and his wife are avid nature lovers and find particular joy in walking their 4 dachshunds in the woods and finding and identifying plants, reptiles, amphibians, fungi, and insects.
